Alternative Treatments for Hay Fever (Allergic Rhinitis)

Article by RJ Bulaong.
In this article I will talk about hay fever alternative medicines. I will talk about cures that are other than homeopathic, herbal, or medicinal remedies.

Air Purifiers and Filters for Allergies

Air Purifiers

A great way to start preventing symptoms is getting rid of the allergens itself from your surroundings. You should get air purifiers that use HEPA filters. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particle Arresting air purifiers. It removes pollen and other hay fever triggers from your room.  Find one that can remove pollutants that are at least .3 microns in size. Since they should be running 24 hours, you want one that is quiet and economical. You should also try buying dehumidifiers. It can reduce humidity and prevent accumulation of mold that triggers hay fever symptoms.

Nasal Filter plugsNasal Air Guards

One alternative to taking medication for hay fever and allergies is to insert nasal filters up your nose. Call these personal pollen filters a “hearing-aid for your nose”!  Nasal filters are plastic filter inserts that fit up inside your nostrils. They are barely visible, especially if you grow a nice thick moustache (blokes only please). They have been mistaken in appearance for a transparent nose-ring. Perhaps this is a bonus for some of you.  Tip regarding Nasal Filters: Take them out if you need to sneeze or blow your nose! Or at least squeeze your nose closed with your fingers and exhale out of your mouth when sneezing.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is another great way to approach hay fever. It helps with nasal congestion. Also see Hay Fever Breathing Remedies and Techniques

Green Tea & AllergiesGreen Tea

Green tea is a great source of antioxidants that keep your immune system healthy. It also has catechins that is a natural antihistamine. A couple of cups daily does the trick and you can also find them in supplemental forms.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C reduces inflammation. Besides being overall great for your health, it also reduces your sensitivity to allergens, mucous production, and wheezing. Also see Hay Fever Diet and Hay Fever Herbal

Hay Fever Dietary RemediesNutrition

For some people, allergens may not be the only thing that are causing the symptoms sometimes to become severe. It could also be lacking in proper nutrition to support the adrenal, immune system, and digestive functions. People who are allergic to airborne allergens may also be sensitive to other foods.

Try to get rid of alcohol, caffeine, and dairy products. Eliminate chocolate, peanuts, red meat, sugar, and wheat. Diets that are high in saturated fats might be aggravating your symptoms. See how your body reacts by getting rid of these foods and slowly adding them back in to see how your body reacts to them. If you experience a reaction when adding a certain food back into your diet, then you know that is something you shouldn’t eat.

Instead, include these foods in your diet: dark green leafy vegetables, deep yellow and orange vegetables, cabbage, beets, carrots, yams, onion, garlic, ginger, cayenne, and horseradish.

Supplements for Allergies

Supplements

Bioflavonoids are natural antihistamines. Some good supplements are flaxseed oil, and probiotics to keep your bowel healthy. Vitamin C, D, and Zinc are beneficial as well. Also see Hay Fever Diet and Hay Fever Herbal

Sweeating Reduces AllergiesSweating

Sweating is actually a great way to cleanse your body from building up toxins. Researchers found that there are some toxins that are only released through sweating. You should stay inside your house especially during the morning when pollen levels are high. Roll up your car windows and turn the AC on to prevent pollen to come inside. You can wear a surgical face mask when you go outside. Wash your clothes and hair after being outside. Finally, you should avoid going to areas where there obviously would be pollen such as forests and fields of grass. See also Hay Fever Tips
